New requirements by China’s environmental ministry will increase costs and lead to possible relocations or closures of some steel production facilities in air pollution control areas across the country, if they can’t complete technological upgrades by 2025.
Under rules released on April 29, the goal is for at least 60 percent of steel facilities to meet lower emissions standards by 2020 and 80 percent by 2025 in areas around Beijing, including Tianjin and the province of Hebei, and around Shanghai, including Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.
