Chile’s New Government Rejects Controversial HidroAysen Dam Project in Patagonia

Chile’s new government on June 10 rejected the controversial HidroAysen hydroelectric project that had been scheduled to be built in Patagonia, citing environmental concerns.

Chile’s Committee of Ministers unanimously voted to revoke approval granted three years ago by regional authorities, and suspend development of the project.

The committee upheld three out of 35 pending complaints presented by opponents of the project, said Environment Minister Pablo Badenier.
