Chile’s Capital Readies Largest Electric Bus Fleet Outside China

Chile’s capital city Santiago is about to become a leading player in electric public buses, but the country offers few incentives for private vehicle drivers to go electric.

Chinese bus maker BYD sold 100 buses to Metbus, one of the largest bus operators in Santiago. The new buses are due to begin running along Avenida Grecia, one of Santiago’s busiest arteries, in the coming weeks.

Another 100 will arrive in January, which gives Santiago the world’s second largest electric bus fleet, outside of cities in China, said Transport Undersecretary Jose Luis Dominguez.
