Chile to Fine State Oil Company $8.4M for Toxic Emissions

ENAP Refinerias SA faces fines of up to $8.4 million and the temporary or permanent revocation of its environmental permit for its Quintero terminal as a result of the release toxic emissions, Chile’s environmental regulator said Sept. 5.

Environmental inspectors found that ENAP improperly used the waste treatment system at the terminal, resulting in emissions of volatile organic compounds, which “had significantly impacted the health of the people of Quintero,” Superintendencia del Medio Ambientechief Cristian Franz said in a statement.
