Chile Issues Latin America’s First Sovereign Green Bond

Chile has become the first country in Latin America to issue a sovereign green bond, raising $1.4 billion to finance sustainability and climate programs.

“The issuance of our first green bond demonstrates our firm commitment to advances with concrete actions against climate change,” said Finance Minister Felipe Larrain on June 17.

Demand for the 31-year bonds was high, with investors offering to buy almost thirteen times more than the number of bonds available, Larrain said. That allowed Chile to obtain the lowest interest rate for an emerging economy so far this year.
