Chevron, Exxon Want Full Ninth Circuit Review of Climate Case

Oil and gas companies want the Ninth Circuit to reconsider its decision to allow California cities and counties to pursue climate liability claims in state court.

BP Plc, Chevron Corp., Exxon Mobil Corp., and others filed a rehearing petition late Thursday, asking for a slate of 11 judges to review a three-member panel’s May 26 ruling favoring San Mateo County and other local governments. The decision handed a procedural win to the cities and counties in their quest to hold fossil fuel companies liable for local impacts of global temperature rise.
