A South Carolina judge seems poised to hand fossil fuel majors a victory in another state-level climate suit, giving an outsized grilling to a city looking to hold companies accountable for climate deception under state consumer protection laws.

The city of Charleston met Brabham Oil Co., Chevron Corp., and other energy companies at the Charleston County Circuit Court on Thursday for the first day of marathon oral arguments that will determine whether the city’s climate tort lawsuit will be dismissed.
