‘Cancer Alley’ Residents Sue Local Government Over Civil Rights

Residents of a heavily polluted sector in Louisiana filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the St. James Parish Council to quell years of industrial land use policies.

The St. James Parish plaintiffs—who live in the heart of the area known as “Cancer Alley"—want a moratorium on petrochemical plants in their community, which is surrounded on all sides by heavy industry.

St. James Parish residents, Inclusive Louisiana, Mt. Triumph Baptist Church, and Rise St. James filed their civil rights and land use claims at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
