The owner of a Canadian aftermarket autoshop was indicted for smuggling about $75 million worth of emissions control defeat devices into the United States.
Philip John Sweeney, who owns KX Wheels in British Columbia, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with conspiring to disable monitoring devices on thousands of cars and diesel trucks — a felony under the Clean Air Act.
The Department of Justice charged several other defendants and businesses but redacted their names in the indictment filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Washington.
