Canada Issues Final Asbestos Ban, Exempts Chlor-Alkali Industry (Corrected)

Canada unveiled final regulations to ban asbestos Oct. 18 but allowed for several exemptions, including an 11-year delay of the rules for the chlor-alkali industry.

The Prohibition of Asbestos and Products Containing Asbestos Regulations, which the federal government had been seeking input on for over two years, will come into effect Dec. 30, 2018, and will make it illegal to manufacture, import, and use asbestos or products made with asbestos, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna announced at a news conference in Ottawa.
