California Seeks Fossil Fuel Profits in Amended Deception Suit

California Attorney General Rob Bonta updated his 2023 lawsuit against fossil fuel giants, invoking a new state law that would require defendants to give up “illegally obtained” profits.

The amended complaint, filed Monday in the California Superior Court in San Francisco County, expands on Bonta’s September claims that Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, BP, and the American Petroleum Institute harmed the state by deceiving the public about the connection between oil and gas combustion and climate change.
