California Seeks Fossil Fuel Payout After Devastating Fires (1)

California lawmakers introduced a bill Friday that would make fossil fuel companies pay for climate change, an ambitious move from one of the country’s biggest environmental leaders that’s almost sure to draw industry resistance.

The Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act, introduced in both chambers as SB 684 and AB 1243, would charge certain fossil fuel companies for their portion of greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to 2024. Only companies responsible for more than 1 billion tons of greenhouse gases during that period would be implicated.
