California Requires Warnings About Another ‘Forever Chemical’

California businesses that make or sell products containing a third “forever chemical” must publicly warn consumers effective Dec. 31 that the substance may harm reproduction.

The state’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment added perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and its salts to the list of chemicals requiring warnings under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known as Proposition 65.

  • PFNA has served as a processing aid to make other chemicals called fluoropolymers with many applications, such as insulating electrical wires.
