California Protects Joshua Tree While Exempting Solar Projects

California will protect the Western Joshua tree for a year while it considers adding it to its endangered species act, but will allow several companies to ignore those protections to move forward with 15 shovel-ready solar projects.

The California Fish and Game commission on Tuesday voted 4-0 to accept a petition to list the Joshua tree, triggering a one-year review during which the species will be protected. It voted 3-1 for emergency exemptions allowing solar companies to destroy the trees during development of their facilities in the Southern California counties of Kern and San Bernardino.
