California OKs San Onofre Spent Nuclear Fuel Maintenance Plan

The California Coastal Commission on Thursday approved an inspection and maintenance program for how spent nuclear fuel stored at Camp Pendleton will be inspected and maintained through 2035.

The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station was closed in 2013 and Southern California Edison began decommissioning the facility south of Los Angeles at the beginning of the year.

The California commission first approved on-site storage in 2000 and again in 2015, but required Southern California Edison to submit in 2020 a plan for maintenance and inspection. In addition to removing the reactors, the decommission involves the utility storing 73 canisters of used ...
