Calif. Looks to Slash Vessel Pollution, Big Engine Emissions (1)

California’s air regulators approved two major rules Thursday that would dramatically reduce emissions from heavy-duty truck engines and tanker and car carrier ships docked in ports.

While environmental groups praised the landmark measures, industry groups warned they may have unintended consequences.

The Heavy-Duty Engine and Vehicle Omnibus (formerly the Low NOx Heavy-Duty Omnibus) regulation would cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90% below current standards by 2027, require more real-world testing, and set thresholds for pollution when trucks are traveling at low speeds.
