California Governor Floats $176.6 Million Lead Cleanup Plan

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) wants to borrow $176.6 million from the state’s general fund to clean up lead-contaminated properties within a 1.7 mile radius of the shuttered Exide Technologies Inc. battery recycling facility in Vernon, Calif.

Brown’s Department of Finance outlined the plan to expedite the Department of Toxic Substances Control’s testing and cleanup of an estimated 10,000 homes, schools, day care centers and parks in a Feb. 17 letter to state lawmakers.
