California Company Faces $293K in Fines for Workplace Explosion

A California explosives manufacturer faces proposed fines of $293,235 for safety violations discovered after a December 2016 explosion that seriously injured a worker.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health cited Pacific Scientific Energetic Materials Co. in Hollister for nine workplace safety and health violations.

Inspectors identified three willful violations for failing to protect the employee’s workstation and provide a safety shield; identify, evaluate and control hazards of handling explosive materials; and provide clear written instructions. Cal/OSHA identified four violations as serious and two as general.
