A portion of a logging project in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest will proceed amid an environmental group’s lawsuit alleging the US Forest Service didn’t adequately study the impacts on the endangered northern spotted owl.
The conditions of two commercial timber sale contracts under the Peak Fire Emergency Response Project contain “very specific restrictions,” protecting old growth and owl habitats, the US District Court for the Eastern District of California said Monday. But Judge Dennis M. Cota denied a bid from Klamath Forest Alliance and three other groups to temporarily block the post-fire treatment plan that received emergency approval.
