California City Must Face Federal Lawsuit Over Sewer Pollution

The city of Sunnyvale, Calif., can’t avoid a federal water pollution lawsuit despite claims that it’s complying with its water permit and that the regional board is already investigating any alleged violations, a California federal court ruled.

An environmental group says the city releases sewage and bacteria from its storm sewer system in violation of its water pollution permit. Pollutants that escape the aging and cracked sewer system and reach nearby waters pose a serious risk to fisheries and human health, according to the complaint filed earlier this year in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. ...
