California Budget Deal Trims $3 Billion From Climate Programs

California’s new budget deal cuts $3 billion from the climate initiatives that Gov. Gavin Newsom touted last year, a blow to environmental plans such as transitioning away from fossil fuel-powered cars.

The governor and legislature reached an agreement this week for a $310 billion budget for the new fiscal year. The budget package allocates $51.4 billion for environmental programs—down from the $54.3 billion in climate spending included in last fiscal year’s budget, but not as drastic as the $6 billion in cuts that Newsom outlined in his January budget proposal.
