California Air District Sues Home Depot, Seeks $30 Million for Air Quality Violations

LOS ANGELES—The South Coast Air Quality Management District June 2 filed a lawsuit against Home Depot U.S.A. Inc. seeking $30 million in penalties for allegedly selling paints, wood finishes, and other coatings containing higher-than-allowed levels of volatile organic compounds (People v. Home Depot U.S.A. Inc.).

At the same time, prosecutors for the city of Los Angeles and Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties filed a related complaint alleging the company’s failure to comply with air district rules violated the state’s Business and Professions Code.
