RIO DE JANEIRO—The enforcement arm (INEA) of the Rio de Janeiro state Environmental Secretariat on April 8 fined Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), Brazil’s second-largest steelmaker, 35 million reais ($17.6 million) for contaminating an industrial landfill where housing was later built for workers and their families, an INEA statement said.
CSN disposed of hazardous waste such as dioxins and heavy metals in the landfill, contaminating soil and groundwater. Then in the 1990s, CSN donated the site to a metalworkers union.
