Brazil Court Fines Companies; Allows Port Operations to Resume

The Environmental Secretariat of Vitoria fined iron-ore exporter Vale S.A. and steelmaker ArcelorMittal S.A. 34.2 million reais ($8.3 million) each for polluting the air and waters of the city’s port and bay while loading and unloading cargo, the environmental secretary told Bloomberg BNA.

“We fined the companies because iron-ore exports that Vale’s conveyor belts were loading onto ships and imported coal that ArcelorMittal’s cranes were off-loading from ships regularly fell into the city’s port waters and Vitoria Bay, harming marine life and polluting city beaches, as well as filling the port’s and bay’s air with particulate matter that have caused ...
