BP Oil Spill Malpractice Settlement Not Official, Court Rules

A federal district court improperly rubber stamped a legal malpractice settlement offer stemming from litigation over the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, a Fifth Circuit panel ruled.

The US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit sided with a law firm representing the Deepwater Horizon Economic Claim Program in an unpublished opinion issued Tuesday, finding the US District Court for Eastern District of Louisiana improperly ordered the settlement deal to be enforced even though the firm never actually agreed to the term sheet.
