BLM Urged to Halt Arizona Mine Operations Because of Possible Uranium Contamination

Three conservation groups urged the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in a letter to order a halt to extraction activities at an Arizona uranium mine and assess contamination in surrounding wells that feed Grand Canyon watersheds.

Citing the “unanticipated, unauthorized, and understudied storage of uranium ore at the Pinenut Mine and accumulation of contaminated groundwater in the shaft,” the BLM should order an “immediate suspension” of mining operations and conduct a new National Environmental Policy Act assessment, the groups said in an Aug. 4 letter.
