Biofuels Use Can Cut Annual Carbon Dioxide By 2.1 Gigatons in 40 Years, IEA Reports

Biofuels could provide 27 percent of transportation fuel and reduce global emissions of carbon dioxide from all modes of transportation by 2.1 gigatons per year by 2050 under a scenario outlined in a report released April 20 by the International Energy Agency.

However, meeting such targets would require as much as $13 trillion in investment over the next 40 years and production of approximately 3 billion tons of biomass per year, according to the IEA’s Technology Roadmap: Biofuels for Transport. One billion tons equals 1 gigaton.
