Biden Taps American Indian Law Scholar as Interior Solicitor (1)

Robert Anderson, an American Indian law scholar and longtime professor, has been nominated to serve as Interior Department solicitor, the agency’s top lawyer.

The White House on Wednesday announced its intent to promote Anderson from the principal deputy solicitor role he assumed in January. If confirmed by the Senate, he’ll mold the department’s legal positions on policies involving endangered species, public lands, tribes, and more.

The agency is already facing litigation over the Biden administration’s decision to suspend new oil and gas leasing on public lands, and is expected to face more lawsuits as it unwinds Trump-era deregulatory moves. The ...
