The Biden administration intends to provide up to $900 million to spur the initial deployment of small modular reactor technology, the Energy Department announced Monday.

Small modular reactors, or SMRS, are more compact versions of the large-scale nuclear reactors deployed across the country today. Nuclear energy proponents say next-generation reactors are crucial to meeting climate goals of achieving net-zero emissions from the US power sector by 2035.
