A new environmental police unit from Beijing’s Public Security Bureau made its first arrest related to air-pollution violations.
A manager of Beijing Huayuan Heat Supplying Co. Ltd. was arrested and charged with violating municipal emissions regulations and the company was fined 20,000 yuan ($2,900), state-run media outlets reported March 16.
The company was found to have not properly operated equipment to remove nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions from a 4 metric ton coal-fired boiler, and sulfur dioxide emissions levels were recorded at 10 times higher than the allowable level.
