RIO DE JANEIRO—As of Nov. 5, battery makers, importers, and retailers in Brazil are required to collect, recycle, and safely dispose of used products, a spokeswoman for the enforcement office of the Environment Ministry told BNA Nov. 17. The date marked the end of a two-year notice period given in a Nov. 4, 2008, resolution adopted by Brazil’s National Environmental Council (CONAMA). The resolution (No. 401) gave retailers of all batteries—including automotive or industrial retailers as well as supermarkets and pharmacies that sell batteries for electronic equipment, toys, and flashlights—two years to set up collection centers for recycling.
