Auto Parts Maker Liable for $9 Million Cleanup Bill, N.Y. Says

American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. owes New York state more than $9 million in pollution investigation and cleanup costs for a former General Motors property, according to a complaint filed in federal district court.

American Axle knew the Tonawanda Forge site was contaminated when it purchased the facility from General Motors in 1994, according to the state. The company used the site to forge and manufacture automotive parts, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said in a complaint filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York.
