Renewable power and localized microgrids could help Puerto Rico rebuild its electric grid, Maria “Mayita” Melendez, mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, told Bloomberg Environment.
Ten months after Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit the island and destroyed the electric grid, Ponce still has about 40 people without electricity in the mountainous region of the city, Melendez said in a July 26 interview. Ponce still needs $170 million from the federal government for repairs and reconstruction, she said.
Ponce is in the second-most-populated region after San Juan and is known for its tourism in the center of the island’s southern coast.
