The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission should broadly review natural gas pipelines’ carbon footprint and whether projects raise environmental justice concerns before approving them, nine attorneys general say.
The attorneys general urged FERC, which reviews and approves pipelines, to consider promoting or mandating a transition away from natural gas, a fuel source of significant greenhouse gas emissions.
FERC should consider other factors before determining whether pipelines are needed, such as the availability of wind, solar, and other renewable energy sources, the attorneys general—all of them Democrats—said in written comments to the commission.
