Army Corps’ Dams Pollute State Waters, Federal Lawsuit Says (1)

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must get a permit for its dams that pollute the Columbia River in Oregon and Washington, a conservation group says in federal lawsuits filed in both states.

The Dalles, John Day, and McNary Dams are releasing heated cooling water and oils and greases into the river without a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit, according to the lawsuits filed Wednesday. This failure to obtain an NPDES permit for the releases violates the Clean Water Act, Columbia Riverkeeper told the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern District of Washington and District of Oregon.
