A federal district court has temporarily slammed the brakes on a lithium mine in northwestern Arizona, handing a local tribe a win.
The Aug. 19 ruling by the US District Court for the District of Arizona freezes the Big Sandy Mine just one day before additional road grading and drill pad construction was scheduled to start.
In addition to the temporary restraining order, the Hualapai Tribe also wants a preliminary injunction to continue the drilling pause for the duration of the case. The court will hold a hearing on that motion on Sept. 17.
