An aquaculture business is polluting waters of the US with fish waste and other material, a conservation group claimed in a new suit.
“Cooke Aquaculture USA Inc. harms the marine environment by growing millions of salmon in hundreds of cages along Maine’s coast,” the Conservation Law Foundation said in its complaint filed Tuesday with the US District Court for the District of Maine.
The waste from the salmon creates “a thick layer of toxic sediment on the ocean floor,” the group said. The fish also allegedly “foster disease,” “harbor parasites,” and “interbreed with endangered wild salmon.”
