Alternatives to Problematic Flame Retardant Listed in EPA Report by Diverse Partnership

Three chemicals that are viable substitutes for a problematic flame retardant were identified by chemical and polystyrene foam manufacturers, automobile associations and other interested parties in a report released June 12 by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Of the three, butadiene styrene brominated copolymer (CAS No. 1195978-93-8) is anticipated to be safer than the flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane, for which alternatives were sought, the Design for the Environment report found.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA)-bis brominated ether derivative (CAS No. 97416-84-7) and TBBPA bis(2,3-dibromopropyl) ether (CAS No. 21850-44-2) also could be substitutes, but the limited data available on them reveal potential toxicities and show ...
