Alstom Hydrogen-Powered Train Debuts in Germany, Replaces Diesel

Alstom SA’s hydrogen passenger train received licensing in Germany this week, kicking off a drive by Europe’s biggest economy to phase out high-polluting diesel in regional transport.

Germany’s state of Lower Saxony ordered 14 of Alstom’s Coradia iLint models, according to the the Saint-Ouen, France-based company’s website. The trains can carry 300 passengers, reach speeds of as much as 140 kilometers (87 miles) an hour and cover nearly 500 miles on a full tank of hydrogen.
