Alaskan Tribes Challenge Dredge Permit for Estuary Gold Mine

Three Native tribes say the US Army Corps of Engineers failed to fully examine how a gold mining operation in an Alaskan estuary will damage the aquatic ecosystem.

The IPOP LLC mining operation, set to be the largest dredge gold mining operation in the state, will likely imperil tribes’ food security and fishing operations because the project’s pollution mitigation designs are unproven, plaintiffs said in a complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the District of Alaska.
