Alaska Sues US to Recoup Revenue From Canceled Oil, Gas Leases

The federal government owes the state of Alaska millions, if not billions of dollars in royalties and revenue after the Biden administration canceled oil and gas leases in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The state told the US Court of Federal Claims that the federal government breached its contracts by canceling the Coastal Plain leases. As a result, the state should receive compensation for the lost royalty revenues, lost tax revenue, and it’s owed compensation under the takings clause of the Fifth Amendment, the lawsuit says.
