Air Force Sues New Mexico Over Hazardous Waste Definition

The U.S. Air Force is suing New Mexico a month after the state’s environment department issued a notice of violation to a local base for failing to quickly address groundwater contamination caused by its firefighting training exercises.

The complaint filed Jan. 17 on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Air Force disputes New Mexico’s definition of hazardous waste for a permit at Cannon Air Force Base in the southeast part of the state. The lawsuit alleges the definition is inconsistent with federal law.
