Agencies Approved Shipping Routes Dangerous to Whales, Suit Says

The Coast Guard failed to complete legally required reviews over ship traffic’s impacts on endangered marine species before approving updated shipping lanes to the San Francisco Bay and Los Angeles ports, conservation groups said in a new lawsuit filed Thursday.

The agency must complete the required consultation with National Marine Fisheries Service before designating and amending vessel routing measures that direct ships through areas with high densities of endangered whales and sea turtles, groups said in a complaint filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
