Administration Readies to Take State Bids for Nuclear Waste

The Biden administration is beginning a consent-based process to find a new site to store high-level spent nuclear fuel, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said Wednesday.

States will be compensated if they agree to host nuclear waste interim storage sites, Granholm said, speaking at the Western Governors Association’s annual meeting. The process will include an inquiry to states “for all of you who have large amounts of land worthy of your, maybe, consideration,” she said.
