15 States Threaten to Sue U.S. Over Energy Efficiency Standards

Fifteen states, the District of Columbia, and New York City are planning to sue the Energy Department for failing to review and tighten energy efficiency standards for 25 categories of appliances and other equipment, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Monday.

Becerra (D) said the Energy Department has missed mandatory deadlines for updating the efficiency standards, allegedly violating the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.

The states are urging the Energy Department to update the standards right away, and say they will sue if the department refuses, or fails to act within 60 days.
