Unum Defeats Disability Suit with Facebook Evidence of Travel

Unum Life Insurance Co. of America properly terminated the disability benefits of a systems engineer with rheumatoid arthritis based in part on his Facebook posts showing extensive travel, including a multistate RV trip, a New Mexico federal judge ruled.

Unum’s 2018 decision terminating Mateo Luna’s disability benefits was supported by substantial evidence, including a social media review showing Luna traveling by RV, visiting national parks and campgrounds, attending a concert in another state, and taking a fishing trip, Judge Judith C.
