UnitedHealthcare Liposuction Coverage Suit Wins Class Treatment

A lipedema patient suing UnitedHealthcare Insurance Co. over its alleged failure to properly cover liposuction treatments convinced a federal judge in San Francisco to certify her case as a class action covering nearly three dozen people.

United argued that 10 of the proposed class members shouldn’t be included in the class because their requests for coverage were denied for reasons unrelated to the lawsuit, which accuses the health plan administrator of wrongly treating liposuction as an experimental or unproven treatment for lipedema.
