United Healthcare Inks $6.75 Million Class Deal Over Cancer Care

United Healthcare Insurance Co. will pay up to $6.75 million to settle three proposed class actions saying it wrongly refused to cover cancer treatments patients say are more effective—but more expensive—than traditional radiation.

The deal allows at least 90—and as many as 240—class members who paid out-of-pocket for proton beam radiation therapy to file claims with the insurer and receive reimbursement of up to $75,000 per person. These reimbursements are subject to an overall cap of $6.75 million, and individual payments will be proportionally reduced if the cap is reached, according to a motion for preliminary settlement approval filed May ...
