Sun Life Owes No Benefits to Alleged Assailant for Wounds

Sun Life Assurance Co. of Canada properly denied disability benefits to a man who was shot and partially paralyzed after an alleged assault involving his ex-girlfriend’s new roommate, a federal judge ruled.

The man isn’t entitled to benefits under his employer-sponsored disability plan because the plan contains an exclusion for injuries suffered while attempting to commit an assault or a felony, Judge Michael J. Davis of the US District Court for the District of Minnesota said Tuesday.
