Suit Over Murray Energy’s $6.5 Billion Pension Bill Stays Alive

The trustees of a coal miners’ pension fund advanced their federal lawsuit seeking more than $6.5 billion in withdrawal liability from an individual and entities connected to bankrupt coal company Murray Holdings.

The trustees of the United Mine Workers of America 1974 Pension Trust have standing to seek withdrawal liability from defendants connected to the company, the US District Court for the District of Columbia held. The court therefore denied a trio of motions to dismiss filed by the estate of former company president Robert Murray, his widow, and another company he created and owned.
